Life On The Rocks

Life On The Rocks!

Have you ever wondered what that means? Well for someone who spends a lot of time on boats and ships it is not a comforting though. Being on the Rocks means that the vessel ran aground.

Speaking of which I remember a t-shirt that a friend of mine was wearing on day. He had been in the Coast Guard and was stationed on a Coast Guard Buoy Tender called the Basswood. One day the Basswood was in one of the harbors in the island of Palau or Belau as the natives call the place. ( These island are in the North Pacific Ocean  south of the island of Guam) After entering the harbor while getting ready to do some buoy repairs they ran into a reef and became hard aground or On The Rocks, much to the chagrin of the Captain.

Well the crew of the ship pooled their money together and as a means of ribbing the vessel's Captain had a bunch of  T-Shirts made in different colors, that had a martine glass with ice in it and a small replica of the Buoy Tender Basswood sitting on top of the ice.

The caption on the T-Shirts said: Coast Guard Buoy Tender Basswood On The Rocks Babadub Palau.
I guess that you could say that that life on the Basswood was on the rocks for a couple of days until the managed to shift enough of the buoys they had on the bow or Buoy Deck aft or over the side to free the bow from the reef. The vessel sustained no damage as the vessel is built with an Ice Breaker Bow and can break up to 8 feet of ice if I remember correctly.

I laughed my head off when I saw that t-shirt, being an former Coast Guardsman myself.

So when you feel that your life is on the rocks and isn't going to well think of the story I just told.

If you enjoyed this post please visit my blog I will try to make more post that are a little less serious that those that I have been making in the past.
